Raising awareness & lobbying for safer wireless technology

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are energy fields created by electrically charged particles. An electromagnetic field has two parts, a magnetic part and an electric part. The electric field is produced by stationary charges and the magnetic field by moving charges (i.e. currents). Electromagnetic fields within the microwave band are sometimes called Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR).

Most people cannot see, feel, smell, taste or hear electromagnetic fields, apart from visible light, which is also part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Microwaves (microwave radiation) are on the lower ‘non- ionising’ end of the spectrum within the radio frequency band.

Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy, retired lecturer in Cell Biology at Imperial College, London and former scientific advisor to the European Space Agency, explains how “Virtually every living cell is a seething mass of electric current and electrical and biochemical amplifiers that are essential for their normal function.   We should not be surprised to find that our cells can detect and respond to electromagnetic fields that are orders of magnitude below the strength needed to generate significant heat.” [1] We are electro sensitive beings that have evolved in synchronicity with the earth’s natural magnetic field of 7.83 Hz”.

Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy states that “Those fields that give the most trouble are the Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) and radio frequencies that are pulsed.  The higher frequencies such as microwaves used in cell phones, Wi-Fi and DECT  (cordless) phones are the most damaging. Our present exposure to man-made microwaves is about a million billion billion (one followed by eighteen zeros) times greater than our natural exposure to these frequencies”.[2]

Scientific research such as that included in The BioInitiative Report 2012 (www.bioinitiative.org) has demonstrated that the non thermal effects of pulsed microwave emissions emitted by these technologies are capable of causing adverse biological effects across many living organisms.

“There is substantial scientific evidence that some modulated fields (pulsed or repeated signals) are bioactive, which increases the likelihood that they could have health impacts with chronic exposure even at very low exposure levels. Current standards have ignored modulation as a factor in human health impacts, and thus are inadequate in the protection of the public in terms of chronic exposure to some forms of ELF modulated RF signals.” (Dr Carl Blackman, BioInitiative Report, section 14, p.16)

Radio frequency radiation, also referred to as pulsed microwave radiation, is generated by sources such as:

  • Cordless phones (DECT phones)
  • Wi-Fi routers
  • Cell phones
  • Cell towers
  • Wireless baby monitors
  • Wireless games (Xboxes, PlayStations, Wii) & toys that are remote controlled
  • Smart meters
  • Some home security systems
  • Antennas that support cell phone, broadcast radio and TV and radar

Biological Effects from Microwave Radiation:

  • Permeability of the blood brain barrier
  • Reduction in melatonin (a power antioxidant that inhibits cancer)
  • Enhanced free radical activity (increased possibility of cancer)
  • Increased calcium flux
  • Increase in cancer (including brain tumour risk from cell phones)
  • DNA damage
  • Effects on sperm
  • Induced stress proteins
  • Increased miscarriage
  • Nerve damage

Exposure to pulsed microwave radiation is also associated with:

  • Altered white blood cells in school children
  • Childhood leukaemia
  • Cancer
  • Damage to glands resulting in obesity and related disorders
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Autism
  • Increases in allergies and multiple chemical sensitivities
  • Early dementia (due to damage caused to our selectively permeable blood brain barrier)
  • Infertility
  • Impaired motor function, reaction time and memory
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rashes
  • Weakness
  • Insomnia

Children’s bodies are much more vulnerable to the adverse biological effects of microwave radiation due to their lower body mass, lighter skeletal frames, immune systems that are still maturing, and the fact their rapidly dividing cells during this growth phase of development potentially heightens their risk of cancer should DNA  damage occur. Never before has any generation of humans experienced from the moment of conception such exposure levels of pulsed microwave radiation. It is not uncommon for a child these days to be exposed 24/7 to numerous sources of microwave radiation both in the home and at school. It is unacceptable that our children are being used as guinea pigs in this real life biological experiment.
